THIS Los Angeles presents:

“DRAWN”
A Solo Exhibition by John Hill, Jr.

July 12- August 6th

Opening Night FridayJuly 16th 7-10pm

THIS los angeles is very excited to present John Hill, Jr. as our first solo art exhibition. With the help of RVCA ANP, SCION, INCASE, BOXED WATER, MONSTER CHILDREN & PHUKET BEER we have been able to fly John from North Carolina to work in the gallery and provide insight into his process and work in more detail than solely seeing the art on the walls.

There will be a very limited number of bags provided by INCASE and assorted goods from SCION. Quantities are limited, so first come, first serve.

John will be working in the gallery July 12-16 from 12 noon until 5pm. Everyone is welcome to come to our Highland Park gallery to observe him working on pieces, ask questions and view the work without the distraction of a crowd. He will also be giving a very informal talk Saturday July 17th in afternoon starting at 12 noon. Feel free to come by and ask questions and view the work.

“DRAWN”
( in John Hill, Jr.’s own words… )
” I draw directly with pen onto paper without the aid of plans or reference material. Once a mark is committed to paper it cannot be changed. Each thing I draw is situated in response to what was put to paper before. By allowing my drawings to evolve intuitively, previously unseen relationships are revealed, pinning down my subconscious thoughts in concrete form. As a drawing progresses, the space created gradually becomes denser, yet remains relatively flat, emphasizing the graphic potential of point and line.

The accumulation of my thoughts, visualized through drawing, becomes a record of my mind’s wandering, in which self-control and personal desire are engaged in an irresolvable game of tug of war. ”

The Block Gets Baptised

This weekend some true legends in the art world came out to show some love on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. The huge wall that’s across the street from RVCA and the Hundreds got seriously hooked up…thank god because I don’t know how much longer I could stare at a wasted blank canvas.

Retna, Revok, Norm, Saber, Jersey Joe and Brazil-based twins Os Gêmeos did their thing for hours on end, taking occasional breaks to chop it up with onlookers and fans…and to come hang out in the shop of course. Jersey Joe and Revok were still going at it last night as I was strolling out of the Dime, Fairfax’s most infamous dive. Even in the dark, I was blown away by the latest addition. I knew it was gonna look fresh, but DAMN!

It’s been a privilege to be able to watch the progress of the piece as I went about my work day. Revok, Retna and Saber are all affiliated with RVCA by way of the brand’s Artist Network Program (ANP)…I guess you could say it was somewhat of a family affair.

Retna actually worked with RVCA on several pieces in the Fall collection, so customers were able to see his work on the clothes, then look out the window and see it on a massive scale on the wall.

So, whether you follow street art, or just like to look at cool shit, you gotta check out this spot if you’re in LA. The historical neighborhood, dubbed the Fairfax district, has become a Mecca for art, street wear and skating…and I’m proud to be there to watch it all happen.

Check out the pics…keeping in mind these are from my phone and better ones are to come. Stay tuned!!

Great post by my friend Mansa. Review of the album and then some.

Those fruit loops look pretty bomb right about now…I’ll take the whip too.
